The Human Capitalism Conclave Print E-mail

The Humane Capitalism Conclave-2009 to announce and launch “100 Caring Businesses and Business leaders” in India was held on 24th January 2009 at the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon.

About Humane Capitalism: Humane capitalism may be defined as the pursuit of profit to enrich society as a whole as compared to capitalism - the pursuit of profit to enrich shareholders. The word caring encompasses responsibility automatically as when you care for something you feel the responsibility for it too. After speaking with various corporate leaders in various forums and consulting people from various sectors we realized that Humane / Caring encompass responsibility. It’s like we care for our children, family and thus are automatically responsible towards them. Hence when we care as businesses for the social and environ-mental bottom - lines besides meeting the financial bottom-line we as businesses automatically become responsible towards the larger ecosystem by being humane and reaching out to see how we can make an impact by practicing the triple bottom-line approach. Humane capitalism as the nomenclature, was in fact suggested by one of our mentors, Anu Aga who is not only a respected living legend in the business sectors but also a woman entrepreneur and champion, very involved with social justice issues.

The Human Capitalism Conclave The Conclave: This conclave aims to define and discuss the "new corporate concept" of socially responsible business that has made its way into capitalistic economic structures over the past several decades. This new "caring" style of capitalism will be defined in relation to the values held by mainstream corporate culture.

The mission: To create a forum and platform that promotes holistic CSR by involving responsible CSR practitioners from India and Internationally to speak about best practices of CSR and Cause Related marketing where CSR is not just a buzzword, cheque book philanthropy or a cost centre but practiced as a profit centre by using the triple bottom line approach i.e. not just meeting financial but also fulfilling the social and environmental bottom lines.

The objective: To get more and more companies and captains of industry to practice holistic CSR by using the triple bottom line approach.

Eminent Speakers: Mr. Rob Dhoble (Omnicom), Ms. Anu Aga (Thermax India),Ms. Lynn De Souza (Lintas Media Group), Mr. Dan Baxter (Fleishman-Hillard India), Ms. Ashita Mittal (UNODC), Mr. R.V.Krishnan (PPI), Vandana Shah (Author), Dr. Ram Babu (Cantor CO2e India Pvt Ltd), Dilip Thakore (Education World), Bruce Murdoch (Avesthagen Ltd), Ms. Pamela Gale Malhotra (SAI Sanctuary), Mr. R.K.Misra (Change India), Darshan (Deccan Chronicle), Hari Menon, Jay Sehgal (Sehgal Foundation), Mr. Christopher Doyle (The Economist Intelligence Unit), Prof. Baxi (MDI), Rajeev Dubey (Business World), Mr. Suhel Seth, Mr. Amit Shahi (Idea Works), Deepak Mukherjee (Shell), Ms. Shravni (Avantha), Ms. Rita Soni (Yes Bank), Yogesh Kocchar (Tata Teleservices)

The ratings: The world over, we have ratings and lists of the world’s best performing companies, most powerful people, most rich people, most influential people and so on. But what’s the point of having all the money, power and influence in the world if one cannot responsibly use that wealth, influence and power for the betterment of society and it is all used purely for self-interest and overt and obscene display of wealth. The most caring companies and business people in India will be a list of people who have used their wealth, power and influence to promote social equity rather than just be listed as the wealthiest or most powerful people. The process of the Omega rating for 100 caring businesses and business leaders in India’ will be unveiled at the Conclave this year, by Grant Thornton, and we will call in for nominations. The nominated companies will be audited by Grant Thornton and screened by an e-advisory group comprising of eminent thought leaders. The List will be announced on 25th March 2010, which we wish to announce as the Humane Capitalism Day
