Elul Day 5

Elul Day 5

The “House Rule” for today is not to make a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline.  Have no other gods before Adonai.  God is a jealous God and will punish the children for the sins of the parents to the 3rd and 4th generation but display grace to the 1,oooth generation of those who love Him and obey His principles for right living.

Man has fabricated icons, symbols and objects of devotion such as statues, pictures, crucifixes and God says not to worship them. He is the Invisible God and has chosen to give us word pictures but has specifically hidden His face. God uses many word pictures to describe himself: light, love, life, bread, etc but we are not to worship the things...only Him!

Idolatry is fed by our self-centered and rebellious in nature.  We often limit God and put Him in a box and put our trust and faith in other worldly things.  They become objects of our devotion.   They may not necessarily be bad in and of themselves but the priority and emphasis above God makes them bad for our soul.  The only one that can fill our “God-shaped hole” is God Himself.

I believe God is specifically offended when we decide of our own will, how and when we will worship Him.  He commands worship at appointed times in His Word and yet we set up our own traditions and days. Many houses of worship decree that three songs followed by the offering and a short message constitutes worship that is pleasing and acceptable.  Forgive us, O Lord.

Turn us back to your Word to discover how YOU WANT TO BE WORSHIPPED AND WHEN. May we please You and not ourselves.  May we align with Your prescriptions for we trust that You designed us and know what is best for our souls. Help us to be in step with You.  Help us to honor You in all we say and do.

Help us to let go of all traditions and customs that aren’t in alignment with Your calling to be able to focus on the ones you have outlined.  Help pry our emotions and sentimentality away from such customs and let us apply our whole hearts to worshiping You wholeheartedly in Your appointed feasts.
